Senior Financial Analyst Full-time, Continuing POSITION SUMMARY The Senior Financial Analyst, Financial Planning & Projects is a senior professional individual contributor role providing advanced financial analysis, planning, reporting, systems and project support across the University. The position works closely with the Finance Manager, Vice President, Finance & Operations, budget holders and other stakeholders to strengthen financial planning, reporting, controls and decision making. A significant focus of the position will be supporting Finance transformation following implementation of the Anthology ERP system, including financial system stabilization and optimization, project cost monitoring, general ledger and chart of accounts improvements, financial reporting, process documentation and resolution of outstanding financial issues. The position also provides senior analytical support for operating and capital budgets, forecasting, grants and endowments, institutional financial projects and continuous improvement initiatives. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES Financial Planning, Budgeting and Forecasting • Provide significant analytical support for development of the University's annual operating and capital budgets. • Maintaining budget scenarios, coordinating inputs, validating submissions, recording approved adjustments and supporting users. • Coordinating donation, grant, salary, benefit and other budget schedules with the relevant departments; documenting assumptions and reconciling inputs to the budgeting system. • Prepare regular operating budget monitoring, budget -to-actual analysis and forecasts / forecast updates. • Work directly with budget holders to investigate variances, understand financial pressures and update forecasts. • Prepare cash flow forecasts and related analysis. Regular forecast updates, explanations of material variances, emerging financial pressures and recommended corrective actions. • Support multi year financial planning, scenario modelling and institutional financial analysis.
• Prepare ad hoc financial analysis and recommendations for the Finance Manager and Vice President, Finance & Operations. Capital Budget and Capital Assets • Support development and ongoing monitoring of the University's capital budget. • Track capital expenditures against approved budgets and investigate significant variances. • Prepare capital project forecasts and financial analysis. • Support capital asset planning, accounting and reconciliations. • Assist with development of improved capital reporting and monitoring processes. Anthology ERP, Financial Systems and Projects • Perform detailed monitoring and analysis of the Anthology implementation budget and project costs. • Prepare regular reporting on actual expenditures, commitments, forecasts and variances against approved project budgets. • Support post implementation Finance stabilization and process improvement. • Identify and assist in resolving financial system, data and reporting issues within Anthology. • Support financial systems and reporting optimization within Anthology. • Assist in developing more efficient financial workflows, reports and controls. • Participate in testing, reconciliation and validation of financial system changes. • Work collaboratively with Finance, IT and other stakeholders on Finance related ERP and institutional projects. General Ledger and Chart of Accounts • Perform detailed review and cleanup of general ledger accounts. • Investigate historical transactions, coding inconsistencies and outstanding issues. • Prepare correcting entries and recommendations as appropriate. • Undertake detailed review of the University's chart of accounts and recommend opportunities for simplification, consistency and improved management reporting. • Support implementation of approved chart-of-accounts changes. • Assist with improving GL coding guidance and consistency across the University. Grants, Restricted Funds and Endowments • Support accurate coding, reconciliation, tracking and reporting of grants, restricted funds and endowments. • Monitor balances, restrictions, expenditures and other financial requirements. • Develop improved financial reports to support management of grants and endowments. • Work with stakeholders to investigate and resolve discrepancies. • Support consistent accounting treatment and financial controls relating to restricted funds. Reconciliations, Close and Financial Reporting • Perform and/or review complex balance sheet reconciliations.
• Investigate and assist in resolving aged reconciling items. • Support improvements to month end and year end processes. • Identify opportunities to improve the accuracy, timeliness and usefulness of financial reporting. • Develop management reports, Finance dashboards and key performance indicators. • Assist in preparing financial information and analysis for senior leadership and governance reporting. Internal Controls and Audit • Perform detailed reviews of Finance processes and internal controls. • Identify control gaps, inefficiencies and opportunities for improvement. • Recommend and assist in implementing strengthened financial controls. • Maintain tracking of audit recommendations and outstanding management letter items. • Support implementation and documentation of agreed audit recommendations. • Assist with external audit preparation and analysis as required. Finance Procedures and Process Improvement • Document Finance procedures, processes, controls and workflows. • Maintain and update Finance process documentation as systems and practices evolve. • Identify opportunities to streamline, standardize and automate financial processes. • Support continuous improvement initiatives across Finance. • Assist in establishing appropriate documentation to support business continuity and knowledge transfer. Budget Holder Training and Support • Develop practical financial training, tools and guidance for university budget holders. • Deliver financial training in collaboration with the Finance Manager. • Assist budget holders in understanding budgets, financial reports, forecasts, coding and financial responsibilities. • Build effective working relationships with academic and administrative units. • Promote financial literacy and accountability throughout the University. Insurance and Special Projects • Support review and analysis of the University's insurance program, including coverage, premiums, claims information and renewal requirements. • Assist with maintaining appropriate insurance information and documentation. • Undertake special financial projects and analysis at the direction of the Finance Manager and Vice President, Finance & Operations. Cross Training and Business Continuity • Participate in cross training across key Finance and other functions as necessary. • Develop sufficient knowledge of critical Finance processes to provide effective backup when required. • Document processes and procedures to reduce single person dependencies.
• Contribute to strengthening Finance business continuity and institutional knowledge. QUALIFICATIONS • University degree in Accounting, Finance, Commerce or a related discipline. • Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation required. • Minimum five years of progressive experience in accounting, audit, financial analysis, budgeting or financial management. Demonstrated budgeting, forecasting and financial analysis experience required. • Public accounting and/or external audit experience is an asset. • Experience with ERP implementations, financial system optimization or significant process improvement initiatives is strongly preferred. • Experience with budgeting, forecasting, financial reporting and complex financial analysis. • Experience in higher education, public sector or not-for-profit organizations is an asset. • Strong technical accounting and financial analysis capability. • Advanced analytical, investigative and problem solving skills. • Strong financial systems aptitude and advanced Microsoft Excel skills. • Ability to take ownership of complex financial issues and work them through to resolution. • Strong project management and organizational capabilities. • Ability to work independently with limited supervision. • Ability to move comfortably between detailed financial analysis and broader organizational issues. • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills. • Ability to work effectively with both financial and non-financial stakeholders. • Strong attention to detail and follow through. • Demonstrated initiative, curiosity and commitment to continuous improvement.
