Your Opportunity:

The Adult Post Anesthetic Care Unit is part of the Operative Services Portfolio at the University of Alberta Hospital (UAH), a Level 1 Trauma Center. UAH provides surgical access across Neurosurgery, OHNS, Urology, General Surgery, Ortho Trauma, Plastics, Burns, Spine, iMRI, and Solid Organ Transplant Services. PACU RNs manage patients' immediate post-surgical needs as they recover from general and/or regional anesthesia, assessing and progressing patients along the post-anesthetic continuum in a high-acuity, fast-paced setting alongside an experienced multidisciplinary team.

Description:

As a Registered Nurse (RN), you will provide a wide variety of nursing services to patients, families, communities and populations, while taking necessary steps to ensure their safety and well-being. In your role, you will utilize nursing processes, through critical thinking, problem solving and decision making, as well as teach, counsel and advocate on behalf of patients and their families. You will play a leadership role in supporting an integrated and holistic approach to patient care, health promotion and maintenance. You will provide safe, quality patient and family centered care while reflecting the shared vision and values of AHS. PLEASE NOTE: Provisional Permit holders will be paid $40.76 to $55.79 per hour. Upon obtaining a full practice permit, the rate of pay will be adjusted to the applicable Registered Nurse rate in accordance with UNA Article 25.02(b)(i) or (ii), as applicable.

Required Qualifications:

Completion of an accredited nursing education program. Active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA). Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP) certification.

Additional Required Qualifications:

2 years of Phase 1 Recovery and/or recent critical care experience. Current certification/experience in IV initiation, phlebotomy, care of the ventilated patient, ECG analysis, and vasopressor medication administration. Advanced knowledge of regional anesthesia, neuraxial anesthesia, multimodal analgesia, and chronic pain management. Strong assessment, organizational, and leadership skills. Ability to communicate findings clearly and accurately, verbally and in writing. Strong interpersonal and problem-solving skills. Proven reliability and dependability. Ability to adapt to a fast-paced, rapidly changing environment with high-acuity patients. Ability to manage unpredictable and stressful situations. Ability to sustain a physically demanding role. Ability to work staggered shifts, including possible extended shifts.

Preferred Qualifications:

4-6 months of current PACU experience in a tertiary care setting. Prior experience orienting or precepting new staff and students. ACLS. Experience with patient care quality improvement/quality assurance. CNA(C) certification in Perianesthesia Nursing, Critical Care, and/or Medical/Surgical Nursing. Membership in the National Association of Perianesthesia Nurses of Canada.
