The Royal Alexandra Hospital (RAH), Alberta’s busiest tertiary hospital, is seeking a dedicated Allied Health Graduate Student to join our Inpatient Acute Care team. As a teaching hospital the RAH serves over 500,000 patients annually across one-third of Canada’s landmass and is home to specialized programs including Level 2 Trauma/ICU, Neurosurgery, Orthopedics, Internal Medicine, Surgery, Stroke, Cardiac Care, and the Lois Hole Hospital for Women. Our Rehabilitation Department is an integral part of the exceptional care delivered at the RAH. About the Role: This is a new role for the RAH team. You’ll provide physiotherapy activities in collaboration with a supervising therapist to patients recovering from acute illness, surgery, or trauma. Key Responsibilities: Assess functional status post-fall, surgery, or trauma; develop and adapt treatment plans; deliver mobility, cardiorespiratory, gait, and pain interventions; recommend and facilitate rehab equipment; collaborate with interprofessional teams and attend rounds; support discharge planning and provide patient/family education; document care in Connect Care. Description:

The Allied Health Graduate Student position provides an opportunity for Audiology, Occupational Therapy (OT), Physiotherapy (PT) or Speech-Language Pathology (SLP) students to consolidate their education and experience within a practical setting and begin to build their competence and skills across the broad range and complexity of practice within their chosen profession. The Allied Health Graduate Student is an unregulated member of the collaborative health care team who provides patient centered care with the supervision of regulated therapist within the discipline of the student. The activities performed, and level of supervision required, are determined by legislation, standards of supervision outlined by regulatory colleges, organizational policy, educational preparation, practice setting, patient complexity, level of risk involved, and competency of the student. Activities may be performed across the care continuum (acute/inpatient, outpatient and community, continuing care, mental health and addictions, etc.). Working in collaboration with the supervising therapist at the point of care, the Allied Health Graduate Student is accountable for providing safe care to patients as assigned by the supervising therapist and in accordance with their educational preparation and competency, and for seeking consultation and guidance from the supervising therapist.

Required Qualifications:

Enrolled in the final year of an approved and accredited Master's clinical graduate program in Audiology, Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy, or Speech-Language Pathology, leading to eligibility for entry to practice as a regulated health professional in the discipline of study. Additional clinical practice hours and/or specific course completion may be required to qualify to work in some patient care settings.

Additional Required Qualifications:

Heart and Stroke CPR (BLS-HCP) certification is required. Candidates must demonstrate strong clinical reasoning and problem-solving skills, along with proven success working collaboratively within an interdisciplinary team. Acquired competencies in clinical practice to provide safe, quality care, in a supervised assignment. Strong communication and conflict resolution abilities are essential. The ability to work as part of a team and request guidance and consultation. Able to accept direction and guidance, and constructive feedback. Able to recognize the need for and seek guidance. Critical thinking skills including clinical judgment, problem solving, and evaluation skills reflective of level of formal education. Basic use of technology and competency in computer, clinical electronic device use, and electronic documentation is expected. As work tasks and charting are computer-based, candidates must be able to perform extensive repetitive motion tasks and tolerate long periods of sitting or standing. The role also requires participation in hands-on patient care, including assisting with transfers, supporting bariatric clients, bending, reaching, twisting, and walking distances. Candidates must be able to regularly lift and carry weights of 10–15 kg as needed.

Ability to involve families and caregivers in care. Strong interpersonal skills, including an ability to develop therapeutic relationships and navigate sensitive situations. Communicate clearly, appropriately and respectfully with the patient, family, and members of the health care team. Compassionate, empathic and caring attitude. Use of Connect Care is preferred.
