Operator II - Roads

Position Summary

The City of Fort Saskatchewan’s Public Works Department is currently recruiting for the position of Operator II – Roads Services. Reporting to the Foreman, Roads Services, the Operator II is responsible for the operation and minor maintenance of most of the City’s heavy equipment. The Operator II also performs duties related to maintenance and construction of municipal infrastructure, including roadways, bridges and drainage infrastructure. This position uses safe work practices and procedures and contributes to the overall effectiveness of the work team.

Responsibilities

• Operate heavy equipment including dump truck, backhoe, skid steer, loader and street sweeper.
• Carry out snow removal on highways, residential roadways, City parking lots and sidewalks.
• Inspect vehicles and report deficiencies or required work.
• Perform minor maintenance and washing of equipment.
• Install, remove and repair traffic signs.

Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent and a Class 3 Alberta Driver’s Licence with Air Brake Certification. A minimum of three years’ heavy-equipment experience and knowledge of concrete, asphalt and catch-basin construction are required. APWA Winter Maintenance Program completion is an asset. Working knowledge of roadway construction and maintenance, including traffic lights, signs, sidewalks, storm sewer installation and concrete inspection, is required. Grader and snowplow/sander experience are assets. The role requires independent work, shift work, overtime and on-call participation, and work in adverse weather. A current Driver’s Abstract is required at interview.

Hours: 80 hours bi-weekly, varying days, evenings and weekends. Duration: October 5, 2026 to April 23, 2027. Salary: $32.06–$35.24 per hour. CUPE Local 30 position.
